Hazy Library's Social Media Purpose
- The purpose of using library social media on behalf of the Hazy Library is to promote academic success and to enrich the learning experience, and to keep users informed about library hours, resources and events.
- Library social media will be used primarily for:
- Promoting and marketing library services and resources.
- Supporting and engaging the academic community in conversation and in representing the University.
- Content on Library social media sites will follow the guidelines set forth in the University's APPM Policy 11-6-Social Media Policy.
Best Practices
- Think before you post - know all the facts. Prepare to share content with millions of viewers.
- Allow good and bad content, no ugly, offensive content. Bad content is an opportunity to politely address rumors and misinformation, which is best done by someone with first-hand knowledge and credibility.
- Be responsive with your audience. This will help your credibility and value. Be careful not to flood the newsfeed with pointless information.
- All communication should be honest and fair. Incorporate your own style and personality, but remember that you are representing the University.
- Correct mistakes in a timely manner. In certain instances, it may be appropriate to publicly admit mistakes. In other cases, it may be best to correct the mistake without a public acknowledgement, but rather with an offline conversation, apology, etc. When you are unsure of how to appropriately respond, contact the Hazy Library Director for guidance.
- Respect copyright, fair use, and financial disclosure laws.
- Don't pick fights, be the first to correct your own mistakes, and don't alter previous posts without indicating that you have done so.
- Try to add value. Provide worthwhile information and perspective. Embry-Riddle's brand is best represented by our people, and what you publish does reflect on Embry-Riddle's brand.
- Don't cite or reference students, alumni, or faculty and staff without their approval. When you do make a reference, link the reference back to the source whenever possible.
- Respect your audience. Don't use ethnic slurs, personal insults, obscenities, or engage in any conduct that would not be acceptable in the ERAU workplace. You should also show proper consideration for others' privacy and for topics that may be considered objectionable or inflammatory - such as politics and religion.
- Avoid:
- Personal attacks, insults, or threatening language.
- Potentially libelous statements.
- Plagiarized, commercial or copyrighted material. Source must have attribution.
- Private, personal information published without consent.
- Hyperlinks to material that is not directly related to the discussion.
- Commercial promotions, ads, or spam. No endorsement of products.
- Photos, video or other media that fall in any of the above categories.
- Anonymous posts or masquerading.
